I try not to focus solely on ideology (liberal vs conservative) but since many policy decisions and congressional votes come down to party line instead of logic, the electorate is forced to choose between "us and them". Bush administration has done so much to strain credibility within US and to damage international relations abroad, so almost any candidate/platform would offer an improvement to the arrogant, cynical, and often illegal policies of Bush II.
