How Do I...?

What you are able to do on PPO depends on where you live. But some things apply to everyone:

  • We encourage the honest and respectful exchange of views.
  • We expect everyone to be polite.
  • Shorter is better. We believe it’s better if you make a couple of points clearly rather than run long and try to be comprehensive.
  • This site is fully moderated by New Hampshire Public Radio. In fact, we might suggest changes to your post to help you make your point. If what you write has little to do with what a candidate has said, we reserve the right to delete the posting, but that will be rare.

For Non-Exeter Users

Registration is required. Your personal information is kept strictly private. Your public broadcaster or a few select news organizations, such as The Economist magazine, might want to contact you and learn more about your views.

Things you can do:

  • Post a Field Note based on your interactions with candidates or campaigns in NH. If you've seen a candidate in the flesh, your Field Note can cover the same ground as a write-up from an Exeter resident, regardless of where you live.
  • Sort and read candidate write-ups by candidate and issue.
  • Post questions for candidates – 250 word limit.
  • Comment on write-ups and questions for candidates.
  • See the profile of Exeter residents. Click on the username at the top of a post to learn their political leaning, occupation, age and so forth.

Any time you post something on this web site, you automatically receive an email when someone else responds to your post. You can turn off those emails by clicking to unsubscribe.

About the public broadcasters and other news organizations: The goal of this site is to give voters across the country a direct view into what candidates are like in person and to encourage voter-to-voter dialogue. Public broadcasters can share that information more widely by reaching out to those online participants. Every news organization pledges to keep your personal information private and to contact you only for reasons related to primary coverage. No marketing, no abuse. That’s our promise to you.

For Exeter Residents

Your main job is to share the impression you get when you see a candidate in person – not from seeing them in a televised debate, not in an ad. In person. Before you do anything else, read these three questions because they’ll help you get a good idea of what this site is all about. Do you get the sense that these three questions are important? Great! You can read them here.

Things you can do:

  • Post a candidate write-up. You can come back and edit your post anytime.
  • Post a Field Note. A Field Note can be based on anything that is related to the candidates' campaigns - a conversation with a canvasser, a call from a campaign, a TV ad, even a conversation about the primary among friends.
  • Read what other Exeter residents have written. Sort and read write-ups by candidate name and by issue.
  • Post questions for candidates.
  • Comment on everything – write-ups, comments, questions for candidates
  • See the profile of Exeter residents. Click on the username at the top of a post to learn their political leaning, occupation, age and so forth.

Helpful hints and various explanations:

  • If you’ve written something on the site, click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. Don’t forget. Click “Submit”.
  • If you want to remain completely anonymous, choose a username that is not like your real name.
  • About your personal information: We respect and protect your privacy. If we ask for information, there’s a good reason for it. We want details about where you live because NHPR must verify that everyone who says he lives in Exeter actually does live in Exeter. We want details about your political leanings because that helps voters from far away understand what might be shaping your candidate write-up. Having a bias is fine so long as everyone can know what that bias is.

  • Use the Vlog Squad. A group of students at the Seacoast School of Technology have volunteered to videotape the candidates when you go to see them. Email me at ppohelp@nhpr.org to let me know you plan to see a candidate and I will send an All Points Bulletin to the Vlog Squad. After you post your write-up, the Vlog Squad member will post a video clip that matches up with whatever you focused on.
  • A caution to families with more than one person posting on PPO. If you simply leave the site after posting, your computer automatically logs you back into the web site when you come back. If Mom and daughter or husband and wife use the same computer, this can get confusing. My advice? Log out at the end of each session.
